Saint-Gobain’s one year field support and contribution for Beirut’s reconstruction

A year of commitment and field support

September 1st, 2021 – A year ago, Saint-Gobain answered Emmanuel Macron’s call to rescue Beirut city by donating construction materials and Pierre-André de Chalendar, Chairman, was also in Beirut with the President of France to witness the unloading of the delivery of materials donated by Saint-Gobain. In coordination with the French Embassy in Lebanon, Saint-Gobain EMME (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East) to dedicate a team to identify needs of reconstruction and support, prioritizing sectors such as Hospitals, Schools, houses in underprivileged areas, heritage and cultural buildings. These actions allowed the renovation of more than 200 buildings, 20 schools, 2 hospitals, saved several heritage buildings from collapsing and allowed others to recover their original architecture shape.

Thus, the Sursock Museum severely damaged by August blast loses all its colored glass façade previously produced by Verrerie de Saint-Just, a Saint-Gobain subsidiary. As part of its contribution, Saint-Gobain donated 155 m2 of stained glass and a quantity of various elements allowing the museum to rehabilitate its interior spaces.

Furthermore, thanks to the sponsorship of Saint-Gobain Foundation, OffreJoie, a local NGO received 85,000 US$ used for the renovation of the neighborhoods of Karantina and Mdawar, areas adjacent to Beirut port with underprivileged inhabitants. The project was completed within a record time of 3 months and with the assistance of more than 4,500 Local and International volunteers. Topped with a well-organized and structured working process, it allowed the renovation of 50 buildings and more than 500 apartments and 350 families were rehoused.
